Is it Time for a New TV Disclaimer?

There is all this furor over Paula Deen revealing her health issues. People’s medical history is supposed to be private, even if they happen to be in the Entertainment Industry. It is not her personal health information that could have injured anyone. How could anyone claim to be shocked, WHEN SHE SHOWS YOU EXACTLY HOW SHE COOKS? She does not force people to eat her food.

The interesting thing is that companies financially reward her for her cooking. That means viewers must see the entertainment value in her shows. Entertainment shows are not Food Education shows, although they could be in another reality in another world. The consumer and the viewers drive the dollars. If this is what the public wants to see, then advertisers will pay to display their products and Networks and Producers will pay Paula Deen, and others, millions of dollars to cook on, as usual.

Sprinkling a few “healthy recipes” along the way is not an effective way to a healthy lifestyle. People can enjoy every kind of food, if they have a reasonable overall approach to food. Getting that information to the public is not an easy task. Slowly, people are beginning to open up their minds, especially when they consider the effect it can have on their family and friends. There is little comfort in unhealthy food.

Critics seem most incensed that Paula Deen sometimes seems to display a disregard for the possible implications of her style. Maybe that is because she is on TV. Maybe there could be a NEW TV FOOD DISCLAIMER – THIS SHOW IS FOOD ENTERTAINMENT. THE FOOD IS MEANT TO BE SEEN AND NOT EATEN. EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK. (Or maybe in moderation.) Celebrity chefs and cooks could be very open about whether they believe their food may be “hazardous to your health.” People should stand behind the food that may affect someone’s health.

The reality is that with appropriate food education the public can realize that they can enjoy great flavor without putting their family’s health at risk. That is something worth celebrating. That is the idea that sponsors should support. Then everyone could “eat their food and have it too.”

When people take the time to get good information AND EDUCATE THEMSELVES about how to enjoy delicious and nutritious food, then they will be able to inspire a FOOD RENAISSANCE FOR BETTER HEALTH. It can be done and maybe the time has come!

Mark Teixeira: The Personal Story Behind the Numbers of a Superstar

(A Journey along the Don Mattingly Yankee 1st Baseline – From 3rd to 1st and from 23 to 25.)

It was great to hear from Mark Teixeira his personal story to understand what motivates and guides a young athlete on his path to Superstardom and how he sees himself in the line of Sports’ living history.

How did “Tex” come to be the famous number 25 and how did a Righty make his way to become the Golden Glove Yankee 1st Baseman?

He said that Don Mattingly and Eddie Murray were two players who inspired his career – Eddie Murray for the inspiration to be a switch hitter and Don Mattingly for every aspect of the game. “I was born near Baltimore and really was inspired to try to be a switch hitter because of Eddie Murray. My Dad taught me to play baseball and I always enjoyed it and one day it became what I do for a living,” he explained. “I also enjoyed playing basketball,” he was happy to add. “To have always looked up to Don Mattingly, who played 1st Base for the Yankees and to now be playing 1st for the New York Yankees is really cool.”

Mark chose 23 to be his number because he was so impressed with Don Mattingly. “He played hard and didn’t argue very much or get into fights. I had his hats, shirts and posters on my wall.” Mark was excited to recall his early days. “So I had 23 growing up and when I started in the Major Leagues with the Texas Rangers. When I was traded to the Atlanta Braves, someone had 23 but 24 was available so they gave me 24. When I was traded to the California Angels, someone had 23 and 24, so they gave me 25.”

‘When I came over to the Yankees, 25 was available,” he said with a reverent smile. He spoke humbly of Yankee Stadium, “What you will notice, if you go out to Monument Park, is you don’t get many numbers from which to choose. It is more like these are the numbers that are still available and 25 was available, so I chose to take it rather than leave it.” Mark has taken 25 to great heights able to be a World Series Champion, a fete that eluded his idol, Don Mattingly as a player. He also surpassed an Eddie Murray record with Chili Davis, when he hit 12 home runs from each side of the plate in 2011. And he joined another historic Yankee first baseman, Lou Gehrig, (the famed Yankee cleanup hitter, number 4), in a record 3 home runs in one game against Boston.

How did he make his way to 1st Base?

Mark played Shortstop when he was younger and as he progressed, he moved to 3rd Base. “I played Shortstop when I was growing up. I played 3rd Base in college and the Minor Leagues. There was one problem, as Mark admits, “I just wasn’t very good at 3rd. I was glad that I was given an opportunity to get in the lineup and get more at bats, as they let me try my way at 1st base.” Mark explained that he thought his experience could be a good lesson for young people to consider, in order to remain open to opportunities in life. “If you love one thing, it is also great to find another similar thing to enjoy and to work very hard to become good at it.”

It is easy to understand Mark Teixeira’s connection to Don Mattingly and how he was drawn to him as a role model. I was on a sportscasting assignment at Yankee Stadium, years ago, when Don was a player and was fortunate enough to get to speak to him in the Yankee Locker Room, in a quiet conversation. A respectful demeanor, quiet confidence and deep desire to honor the game was immediately evident in the manner in which he expressed himself. It is a kind of professionalism that can guide young people in life. It can be acknowledged and passed onto others.

Leadership by example carries through in a long Yankee tradition. Gehrig, Mattingly, Teixeira – these Yankee legends are in a line of quiet guys, who know how to communicate their competitive ferocity by demonstrating excellence in their play on the field. They speak best with their actions on and off the field. One thing for sure is that their numbers will remain a part of a timeless tradition.

That living tradition is carried forward and well represented, today, by number 25, Mark Teixeira. Mark has been posting incredible numbers in lifting the spirits of people on and off the field for years.

GIANTS WIN MIDNIGHT SHOOTOUT AT COWBOYS’ “JJ CORRAL”

(One in 9 Million Shot and a View of Dallas History in Jerry Jones’ “Lone Star” State may explain Giants 37-34 Victory.)

I ran into the one man in New York City out of the more than 9 million residents that was lamenting the epic Dallas-New York Shootout on Sunday night that ended with New York blocking a potential Dallas field goal and defeating Dallas by three. It was around Midnight when the smoke cleared from QBs Romo and Manning’s guns and just moments after New York’s Coach Coughlin called a timeout at the last moment, to ice the Dallas kicker and negate his would-be-successful first attempt, that would have sent the game into overtime.

To protect his anonymity, let’s call the “Lone” Dallas fan, “Keith.” As I overheard Keith painfully recalling each twist and turn in the game to a sympathetic friend, I interjected myself and explained that I nearly missed the incredible Showdown after the lead shot back and forth 8 times, before I considered getting some sleep Sunday night because I knew I faced the infamous Monday morning commute into Manhattan. That’s the great thing about Sports and NYC – Strangers can disagree and introduce themselves over conflict.

What keeps you up until Midnight on a Sunday night, when New York trails by 12 points with 3 minutes to go in the game and after many sensible New Yorkers have already packed it in for the night? Dallas History!

Dallas Owner Jerry Jones is snake-bit in his Grandiose Gridiron “JJ Corral” against the New York Giants. In each of the three times the gun-slinging teams have faced off with QB’s Romo and Manning calling the shots, nearly everyone in Dallas and New York expected that Dallas would have the edge with their Spectacular Home Field Advantage. The Dallas crowds are passionately supportive of The Cowboys in their traditional bigger-than-life Dallas way and serve as a 12th, 13th and 14th man on the field for the Cowboys. Then why don’t the Cowboys win and why do they lose in such epic unforgettable style? Perhaps because they are plagued by a haunting history.

As Dallas fan, Keith, painfully shared his nightmare and I happily shared my dream of the same game from our different perspectives, we realized that rival fans from Dallas and New York can peacefully coexist on the same earth because they agree on one thing – their view of Dallas history and the flamboyant Dallas Owner Jerry Jones.

Years ago, Jerry Jones blazed a new vision and trail in Dallas that inspired many and raised eyebrows for others in Texas and everywhere else. How do you create a new reality in sports in a place of storied history and legendary figures, if your ego is the size of the Lone Star State? The admittedly visionary Jerry Jones had his own answer. You build a colossal football power, provided the Owner, forever, remains as The “LONE” Star for the team.

When Jerry Jones Re-Branded Dallas with his distinctive “JJ” style, he sent the Legendary Tom Landry out to pasture without much of a tip of his hat and into a rather dim setting sun, while extolling the virtues of his new Bronc Busting Jimmy Johnson. And Jimmy Johnson, with Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith and other “Stars” from the Dallas Team, began herding Lombardi trophies into Dallas along their new reliable Johnson trail. When Jimmy Johnson’s skill and story, in and about the Rodeos, began to swiftly rise to legendary status, Jerry Jones also rewarded him with his own early, lone retirement and dusty departure into the sunset.

The Stadium is a magnificent monument to Jerry Jones’ vision of big and brazen football gunfights, with its signature “JJ” brand. But it seems the JJ Corral is plagued with some recurring demons and bad luck for Jerry Jones and may hold nothing more than Aces and Eights throughout the ages, unless and until Jones belatedly mends some fences, eats a little hometown humble pie and politely acknowledges and shows he is much obliged to some of the other former legends of Dallas History.

It is never too late to do the right thing and to try to clear the Stadium of its apparent hauntings and make way for a  new history. It may lead to some happier future Midnights in Dallas and to a better night’s sleep for Keith and Dallas fans everywhere, even if their current homesteads are in places like New York.

(Planner/Resource/Organizer) “Simplifying the College Application and Selection Process for High School Students” is a easy-to-use, step-by-step guide for students and parents to ease the frustration and anxiety they experience during that critical time. “As a parent, I witnessed that need and created a solution,” Sarro explains.

According to Mary Jo Sarro, “During these times, we believe that every high school student who needs a COLLEGE P.R.O. should get a COLLEGE P.R.O. and we are on a mission to make it happen!  Colleges have to consider their responsibility to build relationships with prospective students and to engage them at that critical phase in the students’ development.”
